An All-Inclusive Spirituality and Cultural Retreat in North and South India

Join India-born yoga and philosophy teacher, Raj Patra on a pilgrimage to the great temple sites and spiritual power places of India.

This journey will immerse you in India’s spiritual past and present, with an ideal balance of sacred sites, natural beauty, and profound insights. With teacher, Raj Patra and local city guides throughout, explore city palaces and ancient temples, do yoga on the Varanasi Ghat by the river Ganges, and learn about the many sources of religions that has blended to form this fascinating nexus of “Unity in Diversity.” Experience a sunset boat ride on the Ganges, explore the Tantric temples of the north and the south, be guided in meditation, and of course, visit the Taj Mahal ~ the greatest monument to Divine Love. Together we’ll cherish the colors and sounds, aroma and cuisine, arts and culture of this subcontinent where settled life emerged in the western margins of the Indus River alluvium approximately 9,000 years ago. Walk amongst the roots of what has evolved into today’s recognizable wonders of the Indus Valley Civilization dating back to the third millennium BCE.

Even before we embark on this grand adventure, we will help prepare you with:

  • Two Zoom sessions for Q&A, trip preparation, and an opportunity to meet and greet fellow-adventurers

  • A step-by-step preparation guide for airline selection, passport and visa help; travel safety and Indian cultural norms; detailed packing lists, preparation for health and immunity, and much more

Our journey is divided into two geographical segments:

I. Northern India - Delhi, Agra, Varanasi.

Our journey begins in the capital city of India—Delhi. The beauty in the chaos of Delhi reveals itself in unexpected ways—in the intricate carvings of ancient temples, mosques, and gurudwara hidden among modern skyscrapers, in the aroma of flavorful spices wafting from street food stalls, and in the bright textiles that adorn traditional attire. After soaking in new and old Delhi, we take a train ride to Agra.

The beauty and rich history of Agra and the breath-taking Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, transcends time and borders, serving as a testament to the enduring power of love and artistry by human hearts and hands. You will learn of the epic love story and immerse yourself in a world where beauty knows no bounds. Imagine a yoga asana practice with Taj Mahal in the backdrop…

Next we fly to Varanasi, a spiritual oasis offering a glimpse into the cyclical nature of life and death. With its reverent Ghats lining the banks of the sacred Ganges River, Varanasi is a timeless symbol of devotion. The Ghats, a series of thoughtful steps leading down to the river, are not merely physical structures, but they also symbolize the eternal quest for spiritual realization that has drawn seekers and pilgrims for millennia. Each Ghat holds a unique significance, carrying its own stories, rituals, and legends. From the famous Dashashwamedh Ghat where the grand Ganga Aarti takes place nightly to the serene Assi Ghat known for its peaceful ambiance, every step along the riverbank is steeped in spirituality. The continuous flow of pilgrims, Sadhus, and seekers creates a vibrant tapestry of devotion and contemplation where time seems to stand still as ancient traditions blend with modern practices in a harmonious union of the past and present.

II. Southern India - Chennai, Pondicherry, Madurai, Periyar, Alleppey, Cochin.

After completing our vibrant chapter of North India, we fly to Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, a southern state. Chennai’s past is peppered with colonial influences, particularly from the British, evident in its architecture and institutions. From the iconic Fort St. George to the majestic Marina Beach, Chennai's landmarks narrate tales of a bygone era. Moreover, Chennai serves as a hub for classical arts, particularly Bharatanatyam, a traditional temple dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. We’ll get to experience this mudra- and story-filled classical dance namesake.

From Chennai, we meander through sights and sounds of villages and townships to Pondicherry where we visit the Aurobindo Ashram (Auroville), founded by Sri Aurobindo, an influential Indian philosopher, yogi, and poet in the early 20th century. Auroville is a major spiritual center attracting visitors from around the world. Aurobindo’s teachings on Integral Yoga, spirituality, and the evolution of consciousness have had a lasting impact on many practitioners and scholars alike. Aurobindo emphasized the importance of inner transformation through self-awareness, mindfulness, and the pursuit of spiritual growth. Auroville is a significant place known for its emphasis on sustainable living, unity, and peace.

Our next stop is Madurai. The highlight—Brihadeeswara Temple, which is celebrating its 1000 year anniversary as a dedication to Lord Shiva. This significant pilgrimage site for devotees is a remarkable testament to the architectural prowess of ancient India. Marvel at towering gopurams, intricate carvings, and grandeur that exemplify Dravidian (South Indian) style. The temple’s main sanctum houses a massive lingam, a symbol of Lord Shiva, and is surrounded by various shrines dedicated to other deities. The entire temple complex also includes a large Nandi statue, pillared halls, and beautiful frescoes that depict scenes from Hindu mythology.

Taking a break from temples and cities, we will slow down at Periyar National Park, nestled in the serene Western Ghats of Kerala. While you may not readily recognize India for its vast nature reserve throughout the country, it is home to 18 biosphere reserves, 106 national parks, 567 wildlife sanctuaries and 31 marine protected areas. This megadiverse country with only 2.4% of the world's land area, accounts for over 45,000 species of plants and 91,000 species of animals.

As you step into the park, you will be greeted by the symphony of subcontinental birds, rustling leaves, and the occasional trumpet of elephants echoing through the trees. The air is filled with the earthy scent of the forest, calming your senses and transporting you to a world untouched by urban life. One of the highlights here is the Periyar Lake, where you can catch glimpses of animals quenching their thirst at the water's edge. Majestic elephants, playful otters, and maybe even an elusive tiger, come together for the nourishment of water. Tonight, we retreat to our eco-friendly accommodation nestled on the fringes of the forest.

Ah, the famous backwaters of Kerala! And, one of the most famous backwaters, Alleppey, is renowned worldwide for it’s mesmerizing beauty and unique charm. This intricate network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes, and inlets is a hallmark of the southern Indian state. Here, we will spend a whole day traversing the backwaters on a traditional houseboat, treating ourselves to stunning views of lush greenery, quaint villages, vibrant bird life, and fishermen casting their nets.

Our last and very brief destination is Cochin, famous for its spice markets and delicious dishes that reflect a mix of Indian, Arab, Chinese, and European flavors. With its welcoming locals and laid-back atmosphere, visiting Cochin is an experience that will stay with you long after you leave. Here we bid our travel companions goodbye, as we head home with a heart full of memories to last a lifetime.
